Mae Peter Havalda, Ymgynghorydd Anaesthesia a Meddygaeth Gofal Dwys, yn ymgymryd â sialens anhygoel i godi arian ar gyfer yr Uned Ddydd Cemotherapi yn Ysbyty Glangwili.

Mae Peter wedi teithio i Bolifia i ddringo Illimani, mynydd uchaf y Cordillera Real, is-gadwyn ysblennydd yr Andes. Yn sefyll ar 6,438 metr (21,122 tr), mae Illimani yn sefyll dros ddinas La Paz ac mae'n un o gopaon mwyaf eiconig De America.

Er mwyn paratoi ar gyfer yr esgyniad arswydus hwn, bydd Peter yn ymgymryd â rhaglen ymestynnol o ymgynefino graddol, gyda'r nod o gyrraedd tri chopa dros 5,000 metr a dau arall dros 6,000 metr cyn ceisio Ilimani ei hun. Bydd yr her aml-gam hon yn profi ei ddygnwch, ei wydnwch a'i benderfyniad ar uchder eithafol.

Mae’r enw Illimani yn aml yn cael ei gyfieithu fel “lle golau”, gan adlewyrchu copaon gwych y mynydd wedi’i orchuddio ag eira. Credir hefyd ei fod yn tarddu o wreiddiau iaith Aymara, gyda dehongliadau yn cynnwys “lle mae’r haul yn codi” neu “y mab hynaf.”

Mae Peter yn hunan-ariannu’r alldaith hon ac yn defnyddio ei wyliau blynyddol i ymgymryd â’r sialens. Mae hyn yn golygu y bydd pob punt a roddir yn mynd yn syth i'r Uned Ddydd Cemotherapi.

Peter Havalda, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine, is taking on an extraordinary challenge to raise funds for the Chemotherapy Day Unit (CDU) at Glangwili General Hospital.

Peter has travelled to Bolivia to climb Illimani, the highest mountain in the Cordillera Real, a spectacular subrange of the Andes. Standing at 6,438 metres (21,122 ft), Illimani towers over the city of La Paz and is one of South America’s most iconic peaks.

To prepare for this formidable ascent, Peter will undergo a demanding programme of gradual acclimatisation, aiming to summit three peaks over 5,000 metres and a further two over 6,000 metres before attempting Illimani itself. This multi-stage challenge will test his endurance, resilience, and determination at extreme altitude.

The name Illimani is often translated as “place of light”, reflecting the mountain’s brilliant, snow-covered peaks. It is also thought to originate from Aymara language roots, with interpretations including “where the sun rises” or “the eldest son.”

Peter is fully self-funding this expedition and using his annual leave to undertake the challenge. This means that every pound donated will go directly to the Chemotherapy Day Unit.

Funds raised will support enhancements beyond core NHS provision - helping to improve comfort, wellbeing, and the overall experience for patients undergoing treatment.
